Geochemistry and Geomaterials:Overview Radioactive and metal wastes can leach into soil. How do you get them back out? Developing methods to remove metal and radioactive wastes from contaminated soil is just one aspect of Los Alamos research in geochemistry and geomaterials. MissionWe apply our research techniques and models to:
• create earthquake-proof buildings,
• reduce greenhouse gases
• evaluate radioactive waste disposal options,
• safely store radioactive waste,
• and remediate soil and groundwater.
GoalWe explore the fundamental properties of earth materials (solids and fluids) for a wide range of EES Division programs, including environmental programs, national defense programs, and basic research. Our results are used to model how geological materials evolve in response to environmental changes.
